Fitness is an important part of overall health and wellness, but a lot of us have preconceived notions about what it means to be fit. At Cornerstone Care Community Health Centers, we want our patients and community members to know fitness is for your whole family, from children to seniors: and it can be tons of fun!
June 11th is Family Health & Fitness Day 2022. Here are six tips from your Cornerstone Care Community Health Centers primary care doctors on how to make fitness fun for your whole family:
1. Make it a game.
Whether you’re playing tag, shooting hoops, or going for a family hike, turning physical activity into a game is a great way to get everyone moving. This is especially good advice for families with kids: Play is how children learn and making fitness a game is a great way to teach them the importance of being active.
2. Set goals together.
Encourage your family to set individual and collective fitness goals, such as walking a certain number of steps each day, going to the gym together, or training together for a charity walk. Achieving these goals will be more fun – and motivating – when everyone is working together.
3. Get outside.
There are endless opportunities for fitness when you take your workout outdoors. Between swimming, throwing a ball in the yard, playing soccer on the recreational field, or enjoying the beauty of Southwestern PA’s state parks, being active in nature is a great way to get your heart rate up and spend quality time with your family.
4. Try something new.
Trying a new activity is a great way to mix up your fitness routine and have some fun while you’re at it. Check out the affordable events in your community, like group hikes, dance classes, yoga, and more. Exploring different forms of exercise can help you and your family find a workout that you truly enjoy.
5. Check in with your family health center.
Before starting a new fitness routine, it’s always a good idea to check in with your primary care provider. This is especially important if you have any health concerns or chronic conditions. Your doctor can help you create a safe and effective workout plan to meet your needs and keep your family healthy. For children who are starting out in sports, it's equally important to have a physical exam with their pediatrician to ensure they are ready to participate without high risks of injury or complications from an underlying condition.
6. Remember, it’s about having fun!
Most importantly, don’t forget that fitness should be enjoyable for your whole family. If you’re not having fun, you’re not likely to stick with it. Find an activity that everyone can enjoy and make it a regular part of your family routine.
At Cornerstone Care Community Health Centers, we know that being physically active is vital to maintaining good health, and we're committed to helping our patients and the communities we serve live their healthiest lives. We hope these tips have inspired you to get moving with your family and make fitness a part of your everyday routine!
